SHOEBILL TOUR IN MABAMBA

Shoebill Tour in Mabamba

Come face to face with the King of the Marshes

For many visitors, the Shoebill is the main reason to visit Mabamba. This extraordinary bird, scientifically known as Balaeniceps rex, is one of Africa’s most fascinating wetland species.

Mabamba Bay provides important habitat for the Shoebill and is internationally recognised for its importance to birds and wetlands. A visit gives you the opportunity to explore the papyrus channels by boat while searching for this remarkable species in its natural environment.

The Experience

Your excursion takes you through the waterways and papyrus channels of Mabamba Swamp in a local boat. Your guide will help you search for Shoebills while sharing information about the wetland, its wildlife and the birds you encounter along the way.

The experience is not only about finding a Shoebill. The swamp is alive with birdlife, and you may also encounter Papyrus Gonolek, African and Lesser Jacanas, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, herons, swamp warblers, African Fish Eagles, Palm-nut Vultures, sandpipers and many other species.

Every visit is different, and wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. We encourage visitors to enjoy the entire wetland experience while keeping a respectful distance from wildlife.
